Homemade Treats for Your Feline Friend
Hello, cat lovers! Welcome back to another edition of Paws & Tales. In this week's issue, we're going to explore a delightful topic that will surely make your kitty purr with delight – homemade treats!😸
We all want the best for our furry companions, and what could be better than treating them to homemade goodies made with love? In this newsletter, we'll share some easy-to-make recipes.😽
Why Homemade Treats?
Before we dive into the recipes, let's quickly discuss why homemade treats are a fantastic choice:
Quality Control: When you make treats at home, you control the ingredients. No artificial additives or preservatives!
Healthier Options: You can play the feline nutritionist and whip up treats that even a cat-chef hat would approve of, making sure your cat's taste buds do a happy dance!
Bonding Time: Preparing treats together can be a fun bonding activity for you and your furry friend.
Treat Recipes
1.Tuna and Catnip
These treats require just three ingredients, two of which you probably already have in your kitchen now—and if you're a cat owner, you probably have some catnip lying around, too.
Ingredients:
2 5-ounce cans solid light tuna packed in oil, drained well*
2 egg whites
Step One:
Preheat your oven to 325°F.
Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat, and set it aside.
Step Two:
In a large bowl, use an electric mixer on high speed to beat egg whites until stiff peaks form (tips stand straight).
Step Three:
In a food processor or blender, combine tuna, 1/4 cup of the beaten egg white, and catnip.
Cover and process or blend until the mixture is completely smooth (keep the machine running until it reaches the right consistency).
Gently fold the tuna mixture into the remaining beaten egg white until just combined.
Step Four:
Transfer the mixture to a piping bag fitted with a 1/4- to 1/2-inch round or star tip.
Pipe 3/4-inch dollops onto the prepared baking sheet.
Step Five:
Bake the treats in the preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes or until they are dried and easily release from the parchment paper.
Allow the treats to cool completely before storing.
Tips: Make sure to use solid light tuna, not chunk light tuna, as chunk light tuna is softer and moister, resulting in treats that don't bake properly. For storage, transfer the cooled treats to an airtight container and store them at room temperature for up to one month.
2.Salmon Treat
Made with just a few ingredients your feline friend will love these fishy treats.
BUT FIRST!🙀
Can cats eat canned salmon?
Canned salmon can be given to a cat but with everything in a tin, check the ingredients. The salmon should be free of additional ingredients.
Ingredients:
1 medium egg
2 cups rice flour
1 14.75 oz canned salmon
Step One:
Preheat the oven to 180C/350F degrees.
Line a baking tin with parchment paper.
Step Two:
Place the canned salmon with the tinned liquid into a food processor. Pulse until smooth.
Add the egg and flour and process until you have a dough.
Step Three:
Remove the dough and roll out in between two layers of parchment paper. If the dough is too sticky, sprinkle rice flour over the parchment paper and rolling pin.
Roll out to about ¼ inch thick and cut shapes with your cookie cutter or manually cut small squares out.
Place the cut treats onto the baking tin and bake for 20 minutes, turning over half way through for even cooking.
Step Four:
Remove and cool.
Store in a sealed container in the fridge.
Remember to feed treats in moderation – it's all about keeping your feline friend happy and healthy. We hope you and your furry friend enjoy these homemade treats. 🐈
